Quick Reference

| Service quality | Tip % | On $100 bill |
|---|---|---|
| Poor | 0β5% | $0β$5 |
| OK / Acceptable | 10% | $10 |
| Good | 15% | $15 |
| Great | 18% | $18 |
| Excellent | 20% | $20 |
| Exceptional | 25%+ | $25+ |
Mental math shortcut
Move the decimal one place left to get 10%, then double it for 20%, or add half of it for 15%. Example: $84 bill β 10% = $8.40 β 15% = $12.60 β 20% = $16.80.
Should I tip on the pre-tax or post-tax amount?
Either is fine. Most people in the US tip on the pre-tax subtotal. On a $100 bill + 8% tax: 20% of pre-tax = $20, vs. post-tax = $21.60. The difference is small β use the toggle above to try both.
Is it rude not to tip?
In the US and Canada, yes β servers rely on tips as a major part of their income. In the UK and Australia, tipping is appreciated but optional. In Japan, tipping can actually be considered rude. Local customs vary greatly.
How do I split unevenly?
Enable "Custom split" in the Split section above. Enter each person's share of the bill and the calculator will figure out how much tip each person owes proportionally.
