What is a credit hour workload calculator?
A credit hour workload calculator estimates how many hours per week a course load actually demands, based on the number of credit hours you are enrolled in and how much outside study time each credit hour typically requires. It can also work in reverse, starting from how many hours you have available and telling you a realistic maximum number of credit hours to take on.
This is useful for planning a semester before it starts, deciding whether to add or drop a course, or checking whether a course load is compatible with a part time job, an internship, or other major weekly commitments.
The credit hour rule of thumb
Most US colleges base their credit hour system on the traditional Carnegie unit, which assumes one hour of class time plus two to three hours of outside study time per week, for every one credit hour a course is worth. A standard three credit course, under this rule, represents roughly three hours of class time and six to nine hours of study time each week.
