How to Use This Tool
Select any two national teams from the dropdowns and click Compare Head-to-Head. The tool immediately pulls up all their World Cup meetings — wins, losses, draws, goals scored, and biggest victories — from our built-in historical dataset covering all 22 FIFA World Cups from Uruguay 1930 through Qatar 2022.
For live and extended data including club-level H2H and recent friendlies, you can optionally add a free API-Football key. The free plan is 100 requests/day and requires no credit card. Your key is stored in your browser only — it never leaves your device.
The results show a full dominance scoreboard, goal statistics, a match-by-match visual chart, and a complete table of every meeting between the two teams at the World Cup. You can filter, share via WhatsApp, or copy a text summary to paste anywhere.
The Greatest World Cup Rivalries
Some national team matchups carry decades of history, pressure, and mythology. Here are some of the most compelling H2H rivalries in World Cup history — worth exploring in the tool above.
About the Data
The built-in dataset covers all official FIFA World Cup finals matches from 1930 through 2022 — 22 tournaments, over 900 matches. Data includes group stage, Round of 16, quarterfinals, semifinals, third-place playoffs, and finals. Qualifying matches and friendlies are excluded.
For teams with extended histories (Germany includes West Germany records pre-1990 reunification, and data notes this context). The tool uses ISO 3166-1 alpha-2 country codes for flag rendering via flagcdn.com — a free Cloudflare-hosted flag CDN with no API key required.
When you add an API-Football key, the tool fetches live data from the /fixtures/headtohead endpoint filtered to the FIFA World Cup competition (league ID 1). This gives you real-time access to up-to-date records. API-Football's free plan supports 100 API calls per day — enough for dozens of comparisons. If you are tracking the 2026 World Cup, see our Anniversary Calculator to count down to any date, or our Elapsed Time Calculator to see exactly how long ago a historic match was played.
Understanding the Dominance Bar
The green-and-gold dominance bar in the scoreboard shows each team's share of wins as a proportion of all decisive results. A 50/50 split means the rivalry is perfectly balanced. A heavily skewed bar means one team has dominated historically — though as any football fan knows, history is no guarantee of what happens next.
Draws are excluded from the dominance calculation since neither team wins those. If all meetings ended in draws, the bar shows an equal split by default. This visual is best read alongside the raw numbers — a 3–2 win advantage over 5 games is very different from a 12–3 advantage over 15 games, even though the bar may look similar.
Frequently Asked Questions
Which two national teams have met the most times at the World Cup?
Brazil and Argentina are among the most frequently matched rivals at the World Cup, having met multiple times across different tournaments. Germany (including West Germany) and Argentina have also clashed in three World Cup finals alone (1986, 1990, 2014), making their rivalry one of the most storied in the tournament's history. France and Brazil, Brazil and Sweden, and Germany and Yugoslavia also feature high numbers of meetings over the decades.
How are World Cup head-to-head records counted?
World Cup head-to-head records count all matches played at the FIFA World Cup finals tournament — group stage, knockout rounds, third-place playoffs, and finals. Qualification matches and friendlies are not included in official World Cup H2H records. Penalty shootout results are recorded as draws for the scoreline, since FIFA records shootout outcomes separately. However, for progression purposes, the team that advances after penalties is considered the winner of that match.
What is the biggest winning margin in a World Cup head-to-head match?
Some of the largest winning margins in World Cup history include Hungary's 10–1 win over El Salvador in 1982, Yugoslavia's 9–0 against Zaire in 1974, and Hungary's 8–3 against West Germany in 1954. Germany's 7–1 semifinal win over Brazil at the 2014 World Cup on home soil remains the most famous high-scoring match in recent history and the largest margin in a World Cup semifinal.
Which country has won the most World Cup matches overall?
Brazil leads all nations in total World Cup victories, having won more matches than any other country across the tournament's history. Germany (including West Germany) is second in total wins, followed by Italy and France. Brazil has appeared in every single World Cup since 1930 and won the title five times (1958, 1962, 1970, 1994, 2002), giving them the highest cumulative win count.
How does the API-Football integration work in this tool?
This tool uses the free tier of API-Football (api-sports.io) to fetch live head-to-head data between national teams. The free plan allows 100 requests per day with no credit card required. You sign up at dashboard.api-football.com, copy your API key, and paste it into the key field in this tool. Your key is saved in your browser's localStorage so you only need to enter it once. The tool fetches real H2H data using the /fixtures/headtohead endpoint filtered to World Cup competition. If no key is entered, the tool falls back to a comprehensive built-in dataset of historical World Cup results.
Which teams are in the 2026 FIFA World Cup?
The 2026 FIFA World Cup will be hosted jointly by the United States, Canada, and Mexico with an expanded format of 48 teams. Qualified nations span all six confederations. Host nations USA, Canada, and Mexico qualify automatically. The full bracket includes traditional powerhouses like Brazil, Argentina, France, Germany, England, Spain, and Portugal alongside many nations making their debut or return to the World Cup stage.
Does the head-to-head record predict who will win a future match?
Historical head-to-head records are one factor but not a reliable predictor on their own. Squad quality, current form, tournament context, injuries, tactical setup, and match conditions all matter more in any given game. Historical records become less predictive when rosters have completely turned over. H2H data is most useful for understanding the psychological and narrative history between two teams, and for identifying tactical tendencies that may carry forward.
