Why this calculator asks for your own costs
Tabletop wargame points values change through regular balance updates, sometimes multiple times a year, and a calculator with a hardcoded points table quickly becomes a source of wrong numbers rather than a useful tool. Entering your own current costs, pulled from your army list book or companion app, keeps every calculation built on figures you already know are accurate.

The formula used
Each unit row contributes its quantity multiplied by its points cost per model.
All unit subtotals are added together with any additional points for enhancements or upgrades to produce the full list total.
Building a balanced list within your limit
Most players aim to use as close to their full points limit as possible without going over, since unspent points are essentially wasted potential on the table. Watching the running total as you add units, rather than only checking at the end, makes it much easier to trim or swap a unit before you've committed to a full list.
Leaving a small buffer of unused points, often just enough for a single cheap unit or upgrade, gives you flexibility to react to a specific opponent or mission without having to rebuild the whole list from scratch.
Works across editions and rulesets
Because you supply the unit names and current costs yourself, this calculator isn't tied to any single game, edition, or points structure. The same add-quantity-times- cost approach applies whether you're building a list under a current ruleset or an older edition you still play with a group.
That also means the calculator keeps working even after a points update changes specific unit costs, since you simply update the numbers you enter rather than waiting on this tool to be refreshed.
It also travels well between game groups: some tables play with house-ruled point adjustments or older point values from a previous edition, and since nothing here is hardcoded, you can plug in whatever numbers your group has agreed to use without the calculator getting in the way.
A full worked example
Say your points limit is 2,000 and your list includes 10 infantry models at 22 points each, 3 heavy support models at 45 points each, and 1 character at 90 points. The infantry subtotal is 10 times 22, or 220 points; the heavy support subtotal is 3 times 45, or 135 points; and the character contributes 90 points on its own.
Adding those three subtotals together, 220 plus 135 plus 90, gives 445 points from units. If you also add a 25 point enhancement for your character, the additional points field brings the list total to 470 points.
Subtracting that from your 2,000 point limit, 2,000 minus 470, leaves 1,530 points remaining to spend on the rest of your list, or roughly 23.5% of your total limit used so far.
Frequently asked questions
Why doesn't this calculator have a built-in points table?
Official points values change frequently through balance updates, so a hardcoded table here would go stale and risk giving you wrong numbers for your next game. This calculator instead lets you enter your own unit costs directly from your current army list book, app, or points update, so the math is always built on figures you know are current.
Where do I find the current official points values?
Check your army's official points values through your current codex, army list book, or companion app, since these are updated independently of this tool and can change between editions or balance passes. This calculator only handles the addition once you've entered those current figures.
Can I use this for any tabletop wargame, not just one specific system?
Yes. Since you're entering your own unit names, quantities, and point costs, the underlying math works the same way regardless of which game system, edition, or points structure you're building a list for. It's simply adding up quantity times cost per unit, plus any additional points for upgrades or enhancements.
What counts as "additional points" in this calculator?
Use that field for anything that adds to your total outside your main unit list, such as enhancements, relics, warlord traits, or detachment-specific upgrades that carry a points cost in your ruleset. If your system doesn't use these, you can leave that field at 0.
How many units can I add to my list?
There's no fixed limit built into this calculator. Add as many unit rows as your army list needs, and remove any you don't need with the row's remove button. The running total updates automatically as you add, edit, or remove rows.
What happens if I go over my points limit?
The calculator flags it clearly, showing how many points over your chosen limit your current list sits at. It won't stop you from building an over-limit list, since you might be planning for a larger game or just experimenting, but the warning makes it easy to see exactly how much you need to trim.
Can I track more than one army list at once?
This calculator handles one list at a time, refreshed whenever you reset or reload the page. If you're comparing two different builds, a simple approach is to note down the total and unit breakdown for your first list before resetting and building the second, so you can compare the two totals side by side.
