What this calculator does

This tool converts your audiobook's total length and your current position into a completion percentage and a remaining time, so you can see exactly how far along you are without doing the hours-minutes-seconds math yourself. It works the same way regardless of which app you listen on, since every audiobook player tracks total length and current position in a similar format.

If you also want to convert that remaining listening time into something else, like a percentage of your day or week, our Time Percentage Calculator can help with that broader comparison.

The formula used

Both time fields are first converted into total seconds so the math stays exact down to the second, rather than rounding to the nearest minute.

Percentage Complete = (Time Listened รท Total Length) ร— 100

Remaining time is simply the difference between total length and time listened, and adjusting for playback speed divides that remaining time by your chosen speed multiplier.

Remaining at Speed = (Total Length โˆ’ Time Listened) รท Playback Speed

Finding your numbers in popular audiobook apps

In Audible, open the book's details page for the total length, usually shown just below the title as something like "5 hrs and 34 mins," and check the player screen for your current position in a current-over-total format. Spotify, Apple Books, and Google Play Books all show a similar progress bar with a current time and total time.

If your app only shows a percentage already, you can skip this calculator and use that number directly. This tool is most useful when your app shows raw time values and you want the precise percentage or remaining time instead.

Why playback speed changes your remaining time, not the book

Speeding up playback doesn't change how much narration is left, it changes how quickly you get through it. A 2x playback speed compresses two hours of audio into roughly one hour of real time, which is why this calculator keeps remaining audio content and remaining real-world listening time as two separate numbers.

This distinction matters most when planning your schedule: if you're deciding how many days it will take to finish a book, the speed-adjusted remaining time is the number that actually reflects your calendar.

Most listeners find 1.25x to 1.5x a comfortable starting point for nonfiction and narrative-heavy books, since it noticeably shortens listening time without making dialogue or narration hard to follow, while denser or unfamiliar material is often easier to absorb at closer to normal speed.

A full worked example

Say your audiobook is 10 hours long, and you've listened to 3 hours so far. Both values convert to seconds: 10 hours is 36,000 seconds, and 3 hours is 10,800 seconds.

Dividing 10,800 by 36,000 gives 0.30, and multiplying by 100 gives a completion percentage of 30%. Subtracting time listened from total length, 36,000 minus 10,800, leaves 25,200 seconds remaining, which converts back to 7 hours exactly.

If you switch to 2x playback speed for the rest of the book, that 7 hour remaining total is divided by 2, giving an adjusted remaining time of 3 hours and 30 minutes of real-world listening to finish the audiobook.

Frequently asked questions

How do I calculate audiobook percentage complete?

Divide the time you've listened to by the audiobook's total length, then multiply by 100. If you're 3 hours into a 10 hour audiobook, that's 3 divided by 10, times 100, which equals 30% complete. This calculator handles the conversion automatically once you enter hours, minutes, and seconds for both values.

Where do I find my current position and total length on Audible?

Open the audiobook in the Audible app and check the player screen, which shows your current position and the total length in a current-over-total time format. The total length is also listed on the book's details page, usually just below the title, in an hours-and-minutes format like "5 hrs and 34 mins."

Does this work for apps other than Audible?

Yes. Any audiobook app that shows a current position and a total length, including Spotify, Apple Books, Google Play Books, Libro.fm, Kobo, and Scribd, works the same way. Just enter the total length and your current position, and the math is identical regardless of which app or platform you're listening on.

How does playback speed affect my remaining listening time?

Playback speed shortens how much real-world time it takes to hear the same remaining audio. This calculator divides your remaining time by your chosen speed multiplier, so 4 hours of remaining audio at 2x speed takes about 2 hours of actual listening time, even though the audiobook's remaining length hasn't changed.

Why is my percentage slightly different from what my app shows?

Small differences usually come from rounding, since apps often round total length to the nearest minute rather than showing exact seconds. A few seconds of difference in either total length or current position can shift the percentage by a fraction of a point, which is normal and not a sign of an error.

Can I use this to plan how much to listen to each day?

Yes. Once you know your remaining time, divide it by the number of days you want to finish in to get a daily listening target. For example, 8 hours remaining split across 4 days works out to 2 hours of listening per day, which you can then compare against your usual daily playback speed and habits.

What if I don't know the exact seconds of my current position?

Leave the seconds field at 0 and just enter hours and minutes; the calculator will still work, and the difference of a few seconds has a negligible effect on your overall percentage. Precision to the minute is generally more than enough for tracking progress or planning your remaining listening time.
