This tool answers two related questions: how much time a faster playback speed actually saves you, and what speed you'd need to finish a fixed amount of audio before a specific deadline. Both modes work from the same underlying idea, that playback speed compresses a fixed amount of content into less real-world time.

Why speed savings aren't the same for every book

The same speed increase saves more real time on a longer audiobook than a shorter one, since the saving scales with the total remaining length. Going from 1x to 2x on a 2 hour remaining audio saves about 1 hour, but the same jump on 10 hours remaining saves about 5 hours, even though the percentage improvement is identical.

This is why comparing speed changes in percentage terms alone can be misleading: the practical, real-world value of a faster speed depends heavily on how much audio you actually have left.

Choosing a speed that's actually sustainable

A calculated speed is only useful if you can comprehend the audio at that pace. Nonfiction with a clear, measured narrator often works well up to 2x or higher, while dense material, unfamiliar vocabulary, or a fast-talking narrator can make 1.5x already feel rushed.

If a deadline calculation returns a speed higher than you're comfortable with, consider listening for more sessions per day instead of pushing the speed past your comprehension limit, since finishing a book you didn't absorb defeats the purpose of listening to it in the first place.

A full worked example

Say you have 8 hours of audiobook remaining and you're currently listening at 1x. At 1x, that 8 hours of remaining audio takes exactly 8 hours to finish. Switching to 2x divides that same 8 hours by 2, giving a listening time of 4 hours at the new speed.

Subtracting the two listening times, 8 hours minus 4 hours, shows a time saving of exactly 4 hours by doubling your playback speed. Now suppose instead you only have 5 hours available before a deadline and the same 8 hours of audio remaining.

Dividing remaining audio by available time, 8 hours divided by 5 hours, gives a required speed of 1.6x. Rounding up slightly to a preset your app offers, such as 1.65x or 1.75x, gives yourself a small buffer to finish comfortably ahead of the deadline rather than cutting it exactly to the second.
