Epic Seven Zio Speed Calculator
Find the exact speed Zio needs to guarantee turn 1 against any opener, accounting for his passive Combat Readiness push and worst-case starting speed RNG.
Check your speed tuning
Enter Zio's speed, the opponent's speed, and his skill level.
Effective speed 210 vs a required 235 against 320 speed.
Step by step work
How to use this calculator
Enter Zio's speed
Panel speed plus any flat imprint bonus.
Enter opponent speed
The opener you're trying to beat to the first turn.
Set skill level
Zio's passive enhancement level, up to +5 max.
Check your thresholds
Guaranteed, speed tie, and lucky cut-in speed targets.
Why Zio breaks the usual speed math
Most units race from a standing start on the Combat Readiness track, so whoever has the higher raw speed generally wins the opening turn. Zio's passive gives him a head start on that same track before the race even begins, which is why a lower speed stat can still finish first against a faster-statted opponent.

The formula used
Combat Readiness push shortens the distance Zio has to travel, expressed as a fraction of the full track he still needs to cross.
To guarantee turn 1 even against the worst-case starting RNG, that remaining distance must clear faster than the opponent's distance under their best-case roll.
Reading the three thresholds
The guaranteed threshold is the safe number: hit it and Zio takes turn 1 regardless of how starting RNG rolls. The speed tie threshold assumes both units roll the same random bonus, a reasonably common outcome, and sits a bit lower since neither side gets an RNG advantage over the other.
The lucky cut-in threshold is the floor, showing the minimum speed where Zio could still win if he personally rolls the best case while the opponent rolls the worst. It's useful context, but not a number worth building toward on its own.
Skill level and imprints both move the target
Every enhancement level on Zio's passive lowers the guaranteed threshold, since a bigger starting push means less ground left to cover. Running an under-leveled passive is one of the easiest ways to end up short of the speed you thought you'd built, so this calculator asks for the exact skill level rather than assuming max.
Speed imprints add flat speed once combat starts, separate from gear, which is why this calculator keeps them as their own field rather than asking you to add them in by hand before entering a single combined number.
A full worked example
Say Zio has 210 panel speed with no imprint, his passive is fully enhanced to +5 for a 30% Combat Readiness push, and the opponent's speed is 320. The guaranteed threshold is 320 times (1 minus 0.30), divided by 0.95, which works out to 320 times 0.70 divided by 0.95, or approximately 235.8.
Since Zio's effective speed of 210 falls short of that 235.8 guaranteed threshold, this specific matchup isn't a lock. Checking the speed tie threshold instead, 320 times 0.70 gives 224, still above Zio's 210, meaning even an even RNG roll wouldn't be enough here.
The lucky cut-in threshold, 320 times (0.70 minus 0.05), or 320 times 0.65, comes out to 208. Zio's 210 speed clears that floor, so this Zio can only take turn 1 in this matchup if the starting RNG breaks in his favor, not as a reliable outcome to plan around.
Frequently asked questions
Why doesn't Zio need to be faster than the opponent's raw speed stat?
Zio's passive gives him a starting Combat Readiness push, meaning he begins the fight already partway toward his first turn rather than starting from zero like most units. That head start shortens the distance he has to travel on the turn-order track, which is why a Zio with noticeably lower panel speed can still act before a much faster opponent.
What is starting speed RNG and why does it matter here?
At the start of every battle, each unit receives a small random Combat Readiness bonus, commonly between 0% and 5%. This calculator checks the worst realistic case, where the opponent rolls the maximum bonus and Zio rolls none, so that a "guaranteed" result holds up even on unlucky RNG rather than only working on an average roll.
Does maxing Zio's passive skill level actually matter that much?
Yes. Each skill enhancement level increases his starting Combat Readiness push, so a fully leveled passive gives noticeably more head start than an unenhanced one. Since that head start directly reduces how much raw speed Zio needs, skipping skill enhancements on this passive is one of the most common ways players end up with a Zio that gets outsped unexpectedly.
How do speed imprints factor into the calculation?
Speed imprints add a flat amount directly to a unit's speed stat once combat begins, separate from gear-based speed. Enter your hero's panel speed and imprint bonus as two separate fields here so the calculator can add them together correctly, since mixing them into one number risks double-counting or leaving the bonus out entirely.
What's the difference between the three outcome levels this calculator shows?
"Guaranteed" means Zio wins the opening turn even in the worst-case RNG matchup. "Speed tie" means Zio wins only when both units roll the same starting bonus, which happens under fairly common conditions. "Lucky cut-in" means Zio only wins if he personally rolls the best-case RNG while the opponent rolls the worst, which is a real but unreliable chance rather than something to plan around.
Is it worth building Zio above the guaranteed speed threshold?
Generally no. Speed past the point needed for a guaranteed first turn comes directly out of stats like attack, critical damage, or effectiveness that make his turn actually count once he takes it. Most players aim to hit the guaranteed threshold for their target opponent speed and put remaining stat rolls into damage instead.
