What is a blessed bone shard calculator?
A blessed bone shard calculator estimates the Prayer XP you'll gain from sacrificing blessed bone shards at the libation bowl, and how many shards or bones you need to reach a target Prayer level. This version goes further by pulling live Grand Exchange prices for every bone type and ranking them by true cost per XP, including the wine cost that most simpler calculators leave out.
Every bone shard is worth the same 5 or 6 Prayer XP regardless of which bone it came from, so the only real decision is which bone type gets you there cheapest, which is exactly what the live leaderboard is built to answer.
How Zealot's robes preservation is modeled
Each piece of Zealot's robes gives a 1.25% chance, checked individually for every shard sacrificed, that the shard isn't consumed while you still get full XP for that action. This means the number of actions you can perform with a given number of owned shards is higher than the shard count itself.
For the reverse direction, working out how many shards you need to buy for a target amount of XP, the same relationship runs the other way.
Why true cost per XP includes wine, not just bones
Jugs of blessed wine, or blessed sunfire wine, are a real and necessary cost of training this way, since the libation bowl can't be used without them. Each jug allows up to 400 shards to be sacrificed, so this calculator divides the jug's cost, plus sunfire splinter cost for sunfire wine, across those 400 shards and adds that per-shard wine cost on top of the bone's per-shard cost.
Leaving wine cost out, which many simpler calculators do, understates the real price of training and can make a bone type look cheaper than it actually is once every cost is accounted for.
Common mistakes when planning bone shard training
The most common mistake is comparing bone types purely by shards per bone without checking the actual GE price, since a bone that yields more shards isn't automatically cheaper per XP if its market price has risen. The live leaderboard exists specifically to catch this, since bone prices shift regularly.
The second common mistake is forgetting that Superior dragon bones require 70 Prayer to bless at the exposed altar, unlike every other bone type on this list, which makes them irrelevant for lower level accounts regardless of how cheap they might appear per XP.
A full worked example
Say you own 5,000 blessed bone shards and wear the full four-piece Zealot's robes set, a 5% preservation chance. Your effective actions come out to 5,000 divided by 0.95, or about 5,263 actions. Using blessed wine at 5 XP per shard, that's roughly 26,316 Prayer XP, noticeably more than the 25,000 XP you'd get with zero preservation from the same 5,000 shards.
Now say you're planning the other direction: you need 200,000 more Prayer XP to hit your next milestone. At 5 XP per shard, that's 40,000 actions worth of XP. With your 5% preservation chance, the actual shards you need to buy are 40,000 times 0.95, or 38,000 shards, a real saving of 2,000 shards compared to having no preservation at all.
The live leaderboard then takes that 38,000 shard requirement and checks every bone type's current GE price to show you exactly how many bones of each type you'd need, and what the total cost, bones plus wine, comes out to for each option, so you can pick whichever is cheapest at that moment.
Frequently asked questions
How much Prayer XP does each blessed bone shard give?
Each blessed bone shard gives 5 Prayer XP when sacrificed with a jug of blessed wine, or 6 Prayer XP with a jug of blessed sunfire wine, a 20% increase. This rate is the same for every bone type. The bone type you choose only changes how many shards you get per bone and what that bone costs, not the XP per shard itself.
How does the Zealot's robes preservation chance actually work?
Each piece of Zealot's robes gives a 1.25% chance, per individual shard sacrificed, that the shard isn't consumed while you still receive full XP for that action. Wearing the full four-piece set gives a combined 5% preservation chance. This calculator models it as a true expected-value process, since preserved shards let you perform more sacrifice actions than the number of shards you actually own, rather than just applying a flat percentage discount to cost.
Why does this calculator show a live GE price leaderboard instead of one fixed cost?
Because bone prices move on the Grand Exchange, and cheapest-per-XP genuinely changes day to day between bone types. This tool fetches live prices from the OSRS Wiki's real-time price API for every bone type on the list and ranks them by true cost per Prayer XP, including an estimated wine cost, not just the raw bone price, so you can see which bone is actually most efficient right now.
Why does the leaderboard include wine cost, not just bone cost?
Because jugs of blessed wine, or blessed sunfire wine, are a real cost of training this way, and skipping them understates the true price per XP. Each jug sacrifices up to 400 shards, so this calculator amortizes the jug's cost, and the sunfire splinter cost if you're using sunfire wine, across those 400 shards when ranking bone types.
What happens if the live price fetch fails?
The leaderboard falls back to the manually editable price fields already shown for each bone type, so the calculator keeps working even if the live fetch is blocked, rate limited, or temporarily down. You can also edit any bone's price directly at any time to override the live figure with your own number.
Does this calculator account for the Crafting XP from breaking down bones?
Yes. Breaking a blessed bone into shards with a chisel gives 5 Crafting XP per bone regardless of bone type, and this calculator tracks that alongside your Prayer XP total whenever you calculate bones needed for a specific bone type.
Is blessing Superior dragon bones different from other bone types?
Yes. Blessing Superior dragon bones at the exposed altar requires level 70 Prayer, unlike every other bone type on this list, which have no Prayer requirement to bless. Superior dragon bones also yield by far the most shards per bone, 121, making them relevant mainly for higher level accounts despite their high individual cost.
